The “I” in IPS stands for Internet?
Sorry, but that was really bad (or funny)! I’m old, ok… in the past, when i was starting to use GNU/Linux, install packages was sad (Slackware, RedHat/Conectiva/Mandrake/RPM, etc). We had to download the packages and dependencies…
But the world has changed, and a smart guy did create Debian.. another smart person did create Gentoo…
Well, i’m used to Solaris, and have the same feature in Solaris would be really good! What? The same guy that create the apt subsystem is creating a package manager for Solaris? No way!
Let’s install a package!
# pkg install somepkg pkg: 0/1 catalogs successfully updated: 1: Transfer from 'opensolaris.org' timed out: timed out. 2: Transfer from 'opensolaris.org' timed out: timed out. 3: Transfer from 'opensolaris.org' timed out: timed out. 4: Transfer from 'opensolaris.org' timed out: timed out.
Oh, sorry this server has not internet access, no problem, let’s download the packages…
WHAT???
I CAN’T???
…

“But the world has changed, and a smart guy did create Debian.. another smart person did create Gentoo…”
Just because someone can hack, that DOES NOT make them smart!
Many people can hack something together until they get it to work.
But not many people have the knowledge and the experience to ENGINEER something, and write formal specifications. Huge difference.
So from my point of view, Gentoo is nothing more than a hack effort. Debian is in the “Grey zone”.
Why else do you think I like Solaris? It’s engineered first, with formal specs, then implemented second.
Tell me then:
Gentoo is a hack effort…
Debian is in the “Grey zone”…
and IPS?
;-)
IPS is a work in progress – stay tuned!
Would be nice to see the ips with the whole good (and basic) features like apt/dpkg/emerge and some news like a torrent engine to download packages and make your own repository.
